Where are the Christmas formats?
Last year KOSI and The Wolf switched on November 14th. As of today, both are still running their normal formats even though a number a stations
across the country have already switched. I'm not all that crazy about this format but am wondering if anyone has heard anything.

Jelling,
The only thing that I can recall about KOSI is that I was visiting an air staffer's Facebook ( I don't remember who it was) and I saw a comment from
a listener complaining about the X-mas music starting before Thanksgiving. I'm not sure if that has anything to do with it or what. Also, I heard that
they're is doing it on their HD channel I believe but still yet I would think they would be doing it on their regular signal this year.
As for The Wolf I'm not sure what their plans are.

Just e-mailed PD Gary Nolan at KOSI 101.1 and he said that the switch to Christmas music will happen "soon....very soon". My guess is maybe sometime
this weekend or the day after Thanksgiving.
I also sent an e-mail to The Wolf's PD asking him about Christmas music and haven't yet received a reply.

The interesting part is they would be the only 2 stations that would do that, while all the rest won't bother until Christmas eve and Christmas day..
If you all want to listen to christmas music iti s on Kosi's HD Channel and it is streaming right now from their website kosi101.com.

With the crappy playlists, do you really lose anything by switching to Christmas early? Personally, I love hearing it on KOSI, and I'll be glad when
it starts.
Already listening to two different Christmas channels on XM. The others start on December 7th, I think. XM has actually done something I wish
terrestrial would do: add more variety. For the past few years, the playlists were fairly small. So far this year, I'm hearing songs that weren't
part of the rotations before.

Oddly enough I'm now hearing XMAS music in the grocery stores, etcetera mixed into the background MUZAK lineups, which usually hasn't occured in the
past until AFTER the KOSI flip, so this year seems later than usual to me, also.
Rob, I totally agree about expanding the holliday libraries. Each year we get way too much of worn out stuff like that danm Boston Pops "Sleigh Ride"
instrumental.

I too agree they should expand their playlists. In years past if I leave KOSI on all day, I would hear the same songs two or three times. Very
annoying.

Jell, here's a couple more songs I just thought of that are "played to death" over the hollidays..
1. Little Drummer Boy (especially the traditional Simone boyschoir version)
2. Rudolph (Just about every version with maybe the exception of the one the Temptations did).

The two AC stations here in Kansas City flipped 1 or 2 weeks ago, so we're already stuck with it.
I'll agree that Christmas libraries need to be expanded, but with what? How many new/original "Christmas/Holiday" songs that have been released since
the 60s or 70s have really become a part of our Christmas life?
Do we really need 30 versions of "Jingle Bells," 45 versions of "White Christmas," 58 versions of "Little Drummer Boy," and 94 versions of "Rudolph?"
Because that's really all we have. We have that handful of a couple dozen standards of Christmas songs, and 10-15 versions of each, depending on
format.

The two dumbest Christmas songs:
* "Little Drummer Boy" -- Mary FINALLY gets the kid to sleep, and here comes this brat with a drum? Get outta here!
* "Do You Hear What I Hear" -- "A child, a child, shivers in the cold. Let us bring him silver and gold." Silver and gold? Screw that! Bring the kid a
blanket! Silver and gold won't help because the inn's already full -- and it's full because Joseph didn't call ahead!

I've probally got around 50 or 60 "good" holliday rock/AC songs in my library. At an average of three minutes apiece, they still only fill about four
hours without repeating anything at my estimate.

Good observation, Boon. But, no dumb Christmas song list would be complete without "Grandma Got Run Over By A Reindeer." Then, Cletus T. Judd came
out with "Grandpa Got Run Over By A John Deere." Just what we need...a stupid parody song covering another stupid song.

Given the choice, I'm afraid I'd rather listen to "Granma" in any incarnation than those ridiculous barking "Jingle Dogs", which I think was the
all-time low in XMAS music.

Count The Wolf out of the Christmas race, PD Randy Shannon said they have no plans for wall to wall Christmas music on The Wolf this year. Instead
they will add some Christmas music by country artists starting after Thanksgiving.

Yeah, Granma is about the only original song over the last couple decades that's made it's way into Christmas rotations every year since.

I wonder what, if any, effect the new PPM's will have on their Christmas format. I'm guessing their numbers should be pretty good since as of now,
they have no competition.

I'm surprised they flipped on a Thursday. I was starting to guess tomorrow (Friday). As for the Wolf, I don't think they had any boost in their
numbers going all-XMAS last year, so I'm figuring they decided "why bother?" this time.

I agree with you, to an extent. Gotta tell you, though...there are new songs and "unknown" songs out there that aren't bad at all. I just put myself
on the spot, I know, and I'm at work where I can't even think of many songs off the top of my head. (haha)
I've heard some songs on XM that I've never heard before that are pretty good. There's a Taylor Swift song on right now, in fact.
I also have albums from both famous and not-so-famous groups that have alternatives to the standards, and they could easily be played on the radio.
Easily. And they'd probably come across as a fresh change of pace to the listeners. Mix those songs in with the traditional songs, and I think you
really stand out.
But if no one takes a chance and puts them into the playlists.........
That's why the songs haven't become a part of "our Christmas life". People listen to all kinds of good songs at home, but the programmers never
reached out to include them in the playlists. So we get the same tired old songs in the same tired rotations.
But I remain positive. =)

No, radio just plays the "safe" holiday music... Nothing too religious... or specific about naming... um... you know... ‘yimmach shemo
vezikhro’...
"Tradition"

That article had nothing to do with showing the PD pushing the button to make it all holiday music. Which btw is the most interesting Christmas music
I ever heard before.
